How to Treat Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a diagnostic term that is used to describe inflammation in the plantar fascia.  The plantar fascia is connective tissue (similar to a tendon or ligament) that connects the heel and forefoot.  The primary complaint is usually a sharp heel pain that radiates along the bottom of the foot.  The pain is usually worse with walking or upright activities.  It may even be noticed that the pain is the absolute worst with those first few steps in the morning.  There are a few ways that plantar fasciitis may develop. Causes of plantar fasciitis: 1)   Flat feet, also known as hyperpronation.  Over time this can cause repetitive tension or overload on the bottom of the foot.  This overload will produce a constant stretching effect that can stress the plantar fascia. 2)   High arch, or being overly supinated is another possible cause of plantar fasciitis.  This sometimes causes the foot to be too...

How to Treat Piriformis Syndrome

Have you ever heard of such an odd word as piriformis? Although uncommon to most, this is actually a muscle that can cause quite a bit of problems for many people. As a chiropractor I deal with people having problems in this muscle on a daily basis. The piriformis is a deep muscle in the back of the hip, it starts on the lowest part of the spine called the sacrum and then attaches to the back of the hip bone. Many times when a patient comes in and says that they have sciatica, it is actually a piriformis muscle syndrome. Joint centration is a common term used to describe the proper alignment of joints. This is the most beneficial or optimal position for a joint to properly support the body, as well as to allow for the most desirable movement. In short, joint centration allows for the best possible distribution of loads at the articular surfaces. Traditionally, chiropractors have talked about “subluxations” and bones being out of place. I believe the joint centration model to be more accurate in describing the benefits that chiropractic treatments provide. Understanding Core Stability

Core stability is gaining a lot of attention these days and for good reason. The Core involves all of the muscles in our hips, pelvis, and low back.  It is where our center of gravity is located and it is the foundation from which all body movements occur.  It has been found that people who do not have good coordination and stability of their core have poor body mechanics which leads to excessive wear and tear of joints and soft tissues. This is a common cause of pain as well as increases the risk for injury.
